Rod And Reel

Lets do a write up on a rod and reel

I haven’t done a rod and a reel together so I am going to throw together the perfect combo rod and reel with line for under a hundred bucks. It’ll be a quick writer up because Im at work and don’t have a ton of time, but this was on my mind last night and I want to make sure that I don’t forget about the beginners out there!

Rod = UGLY STICK – You cannot beat it. These things are virtually impossible to break. You can beat them up and they are one lasting. Cheap too!

I prefer the one piece (always) becuae there is nothing I hate more than casting half of my rod off        into the dark abyss. This isn’t good for your line either, so trust me – go one piece.

You can fight huge fish with this rod and it will not break, I landed my first tarpon with this bad boy, and it held strong through the whole fight.

The next reel I am going to recommend is the Diawa Crossfire 3000 special. This little beauty lasted me over a year on long days and hard nights. I learned how to fish with this reel. You are going to want to upgrade at some point, but it is the perfect set up for a combo. Once you get the feel of the fishing game, you will know what you need as far as upgrades go.

If you want strong line, get this stuff. POWER PRO 20LB – you can’t do better for your money. Its tough, you can pack more on a reel, and it will last twice as long as mono without the line memory. If you don’t listen to anything I say about fishing, listen to this, buy braided line. You will land bigger fish, and thats what we all want.

Ok so there is my 100 buck deal of the day. I hope you enjoy! And catchemup!

Okuma ABF-50 Avenger Baitfeeder Spinning Reel

Solid Fishing Reel For A Guest Or Amateur!

I was pretty impressed with this little thing. Its nothing to brag about but I had some peeps come into town from Virginia (thats where Im from) who wanted to fish. Most of the group had done nothing but fish ponds and fresh water creeks (hicks – that why I moved) so I picked up the Okuma ABF-50 Avenger Baitfeeder Spinning Reel to make sure my good tackle didnt get worn out.

Light weight and durrable. Jessy beat one of them up pretty good and she even caught a few fish. So I would say thumbs up to these reels if you want something to beat up, leave laying around in the truck, or just have as a back up. They are dirt cheap and get the job done. For 40 bucks, you cant beat it.

I will make sure to keep you posted on how long they actually last.

Don Don Don! The Stella FE

If you are ready to get serious about your fishing reel collection, now is the time! Dont tell your wife, just do-it. (I know I’m gonna be keeping this purchase to myself when it comes to certain family)

I don’t own this rod, but have recently fished it. At first I had somewhat of a negative opinion about the thing because of how much they cost, but throughout the day realized why its such a good investment. My buddy has always sworn by this real, “Dude, when are you gonna get serious and get on of these things?” He has a half a dozen of these reels all rigged up on different rods, its a little overboard.

Im like, “why do you need to drop so much cash on a fishing reel”, I can catch fish all the same on a fishing reel like the Stradic 4000 (currently my all time favorite). After using the stella all day, I realized that I wasn’t tired from cranking on a fishing reel. For me thats a big deal. So I started digging around for some specs and this is what I found.

Stone Skipping – No Relation to Snook Heaven

I was relaxing with some friends a few years ago when the topic of skipping came up. I love skipping stones. We were talking and one of them said that their little brother killed a duckling with a stone, she emphasized that it was an accident, but nevertheless the duckling does not breathe. Her past situation made me remember something that I had done while at Mount Holyoke College.

There was a big Canadian Goose in a smallish pond that rested in front of a dorm building. The goose was swimming in the middle of the water and I noticed that every time another bird tried to float along it hassled them. The edge of the pond was lined with ducks and smaller geese, too scared to confront the bully. The Canadian was selfish and discontent. At this point Jesus would have forgiven it, but I am a stone thrower. And that’s exactly what I did. There weren’t many rocks, and none of them were fine but I decided that sometimes in you don’t get the pretty things. I threw a stone with fatal velocity and watched with satisfaction as it narrowly missed the foreign animal. This was nice because I wanted to take my time with him. I tossed a second stone and someone yelled from behind me.

It was a dreadlocked, earth-mother, trustafarian. “What are you doing?!”

“I’m trying to kill that goose.”

By the way: I fish a Stradic MgFB on an Ugly Stik, no braid higher than 20.

Love,

Ben

A box of tools doesn’t make you a mechanic- Palomar Knot

Ben C with Snook-a-saurus RexAlthough this site has been dedicated to the review of new fishing reels in name, my first review will not be of one. One of the truisms of fishing is that good gear does not equal success on the water. All too often I see guys going out and buying the best gear, when they should of saved their money for the seafood counter of their nearest grocery store. That being said, I’ve also seen guys catch lunker Snook off less than a hundred dollars of rod, reel, line, and lure combined. One of my best fishing memories is of my fishing buddy Ben C., catching Snook-a-saurus Rex (pictured) off my “guest set-up”, a Cabelas spinning combo, which cost 1/4 of my set-up. There are only two ways to tell an expert fisherman from a beginner. The first and foremost is finding out if  they can catch fish. The second is how well do they know their knots. A broken clock is right twice a day, so occasionally a beginning fisherman can produce Snook like a modern day Frank Sargent, but on the other hand, a beginning fisherman will never accidentally tie a Bimini, Blood, Surgeon, Snell, or Uni. An expert fisherman will be a master of the aforementioned, capable of tying them in the dark, in 6 to 8, and fast. One of my favorite knots is the Palomar Knot for two reasons…1) I can tie it in the dark, in 6 to 8, and fast, and 2) its incredibly strong. In 2009, Field and Stream magazine rated it as the 2nd strongest knot, and most Internet discussion boards have a similar opinion. It has been rated as holding around 90%+ of actual line strength, which is incredible for such a simple knot. Another great thing about this knot is that it works for braided line, which not all knots are good for braid, the line of choice for Snook-aholics. I’m happy  for any fisherman that can go out and buy a G. Loomis and new Shimano Stella, but you’ll get broken off every time if your tying granny knots. In closing, if you can’t tie a Palomar, you’re just a toolbox, stick with chartered trips and don’t bait your own hook.

Capt Jeff Old School Big Game Fishing Video

Just checking in

Hey guys whats up, just wanted to check in. Its been pretty cold here in Palm Beach County the past 36 hours, so I haven’t done much fishing. Im actually at a friends house talking spots and rigging rods for next week. One thing about this game is that you have to double check your knots and keep your snatch hooks sharp, because you never know when your gonna hook the big one!

Id like to give a big warm shout out to a world class fisherman and angler Capt Jeff – Check out his youtube video below, its an old one, but still one of my favorites! In the meantime, Im gonna be soaking in the Hot Tub laughing at the cold weather!

And thats how you get it done down here in South Florida!

Casio Men’s Ana-Digi Forester Fishing Timer Watch

Casio Men's Ana-Digi Forester Fishing Timer Watch

I just dropped a good link for the Rapala Combo tool and figured I would do one on my 2nd most useful tool outside of my rod and reel. Salt water fishing is usually tide dependent, unless of course, you’re just dropping weights on the bottom hoping for a bite.

With a good watch you can stay on top of the tide change so you can catch bigger fish. I use my watch for a number of different things, the first being my fighting time. When I am aware of whats going on after a fish bites, I like to smash the timer button to see how long it takes me to fight the fish in. Yeah I know, I’m a little weird – but whatever! Its my thing.

The main thing about this watch thats awesome, is it tells you when the fish are feeding, and is pretty accurate within the half hour. It does all of this based on your location, which you have to set into the watch so if your not on top of your game then this feature won’t do you any good. If you are on top of your game, well then its awesome – and it actually works for me anyway. I found a review from Amazon on the product that complements my belief that it works, and its posted below.

Casio Men’s Ana-Digi Forester Fishing Timer Watch

The Casio Men’s Pathfinder Fishing Timer Watch is water resistant to 300 feet and includes a unique compass function, making it the perfect accessory for fishermen and other outdoorsmen. Constructed with a stainless steel case, the watch includes a stationary stainless steel bezel, and a black leather wristband with an adjustable buckle clasp for the perfect fit. A durable mineral window shields the black and digital-gray dial face, which features silver-tone Arabic numeral hour indexes, and a digital time display at the six o’clock position. The digital display shows the time, as well as the day, date, and moon cycle. Silver-tone cardinal directions ring the bezel, while degrees encircle the dial in increments of 30. This quartz-powered timepiece includes an illumination function, a 10-year battery life.

4.0 out of 5 stars actually works, April 5, 2009

This review is from: Casio Men’s AMW700B-1AV Ana-Digi Forester Fishing Timer Watch (Watch)

once you set the watch for your location the fish feeding indicator is fairly close. I fish daily and have been watching it for 2 months now. with the exception of changes in barometric preasure the watch calculates top feeding times and seems to nail it within 30 min, if they had included a barometer in the watch and cross referenced it to the moon phase it would have been near perfect. the few times it has been off were due to obvious preasure changes, if your lucky enough to be out while the preasure is falling before a storm and the moon phase says dinner time for trout you’ll have a fish every other cast or so. I’d give it 5 stars but the light could be better (it works, but barely) and the band size (12mm or 13mm I think) makes finding replacement bands difficult, considering what the watch is for it would be nice to have a more secure band like the double wrap or nato style bands but unfortunately they don’t come that small.

Rapala Fillet Tool Combo

Rapala Fillet Tool Combo

Im sitting up last night thinking about my fishing site and wondering what it needed. I was thinking questions like, What do I have that people really need? The tool was the first thing that popped into my mind.

I use the Rapala pliers from this kit every time I fish, mainly because I catch and release everything. Its the middle of winter season and I hooked up on a fatty Snook last night from my buddies flats boat. The best thing about these pliers is the hook on the end of them, you can unhook dehook release the hook from whatever monster fish your catching. The Snook that I landed last night sure did love me for getting him back in the water so fast!

Check this baby out! Its a solid set of pliers and filet knife! And you can’t beat the freakin price, I mean come on 20 bucks! I ordered a spare set because Im good and not cleaning my tools after I use them, and we all know what salt water does to a good set of pliers if we don’t clean them off! But yeah, I dropped the product link below, so check it out.

This review is from: Rapala Fillet Tool Combo 8 1/2 Fishing Pliers w / 6 S-G Fillet Knife & Sheath (Sports)

This is by no means the first Rapala Fillet knife or Pliers that I have bought, and will not be my last.

The fillet knife comes in a sturdy sheath with a belt loop, and comes with a razor sharp blade. One of the things that I like so well about the fillet knife is the fact that its flexible and it sharpens very easily. This makes it easy to put a new edge on it each time before using it if you have very many fish to clean. One thing about the knife is that they usually do come with Rapala’s pull through sharpener but this combo does not include that.

As for the pliers they are well built and very sturdy. All of the ones I have used have resisted rust very well and are still in use.

I would highly recommend this combo to anybody that is looking for a good quality fillet knife and pliers at a great price, you won’t be disappointed.

I really like this set. The pliers have a hook on the end which makes it really easy to remove the hook from the fish. The other features to it are also great. And as always, the fillet knife is about the best you can buy with the rapala stamp on it. Great set, recommend to anyone.

On a side note: Make sure that you don’t keep illegal fish! Another friend of mine got caught with a Snook not to long ago that was a 1/2 an inch under the slot, he had to pay a fine of $1100 dollars when he went to court for it! So yeah, be careful out there guys!
